Marie Pahlmeyer is a Seattle-based scratchboard artist and a Pacific Northwest native. Scratchboard is an art form that involves removing a thin layer of black ink to reveal a white layer below. This medium allows for incredible detail that lends itself well to rendering natural textures, such as the patterns on a butterfly's wing or it's fuzzy body. In this series, since scratchboard is a black and white medium, the rich colors of the butterflies have been added back into the pieces in the branches the butterflies are perched on.
